the area became a centre of hotels and apartments and lots of restaurants bars and shops.Local officials are now providing such things as free jazz and classical concerts so as to rinse off the bad reputation Benidorm once had being packed with trouble makers!
Benidorm has two semi-circular shaped beaches with golden sand that is always well cared for and clean and that makes it an ideal family holiday resort. On the Levante side the shopping areas offer all kinds of goods. There you can find very intense nightlife with many discos and nightclubs, many bars and lots of fine restaurants. The city does not sleep up to dawn! Then you can enjoy in all restaurants everything from bacon and eggs to fish and chips and 'tea like mum makes'.
The old part of Benidorm is situated in a part of land that separates the two beaches and is called Canfali Hill. In the old town of Benidorm one can find most of the shops. In Benidorm you can enjoy the beautifukl beaches, go-karting, play ten-pin bowling or take in two theme parks, the water features at Aqualand or watch a dolphin show.
Another resort that is really worthy of a visit is Calpeand is located just north of Benidorm. Another charming little town north of Benidorm is Altea which maintains peaceful elements and is very tranquil after careful development in the area by the local officials. There are no skyscrapers here; there are only 257 steps up to the old town from which a wonderful view can be enjoyed.
Inland from Benidorm
Among the mountains you can view there is a sweet-smell of wild lavender and herbs and in July and August there is a fragrance of blackberries which are rich enough to be taken. Drive south on the motorway to Villajoyosa then take the smaller road to Sella. The countryside is plain until you look down to see the deep blue of the sea of the Amadorio Dam, a fisherman's favourite. From Sella, the road follows a hillside filled with vines and then you reach the Safari Aitana, one of the largest safari parks in Europe. From here head for Guadalest (25km from Benidorm), where you will find the famous fortress built by the Moors some 1,200 years ago.
The fortress is only easy to get to through a 50 feet long tunnel through the rock. From here take the Parcent road for 2.5km to meet the El Algar Waterfalls. You should leave your car in the car park and walk to the falls. You can indulge yourself in the cold refreshing waters beneath the 80 foot tall falls or ride a donkey and go round the area. 10km further along the C3318 is Tarbena, an amazing mountain village, where you can taste delicious sausages.
It is extraordinary how a short drive from the coast takes you around to see such a variety of different landscapes and cultures. That really makes the Costa Blanca an ideal destination for any kind of holiday. |
